Home Birth

What exactly is the Home Birth Service?

The HSE Home Birth service is safe and complete maternity care for your pregnancy, birth and post-partum period, using your personal chosen community midwife throughout.

It is an excellent option for low-risk pregnant women considering birthing at home due to preferences, convenience or even due to concerns of fast births and distances from the hospital. Antenatals checks are performed in your midwife’s clinic or at your own home, as opposed to in the hospital.

This long-standing trusted service is provided by the HSE and includes shared care with your own GP. All usual scans are carried out without costs to you.

Costs of the home birth service?

All maternity care is free, costs of this valuable service are provided for in full by the HSE.

Can I change my mind?

Yes, of course. If at any stage during the pregnancy or birth you decide that you would prefer to give birth in a hospital instead of at home, we will simply transfer. You may still have your own midwife present at the birth and for post natal visits if you so choose.

When to contact?

You can contact your midwife as soon as you are pregnant. Your midwife has important information and tips to help you in the first weeks. She will also make the necessary arrangements for your first scan, among other things. It is possible to join the Home Birth Service at any stage throughout the pregnancy.
